Dearly Beloved,
We left you with tales of raccoons and root beer, let me continue the story. NYC was very kind to us, and for those who are interested -here’s a quick recap of some of the things that occurred.
-Brooklyn Breakfast; waitress informs us that her daughter is engaged to a Brit she met on WORLD OF WARCRAFT. Minds blown.
-Piano’s Lower East Side, my pedals decided they dont like America, French soundman saves my life. Jet lag hits us. The first time I’ve ever slept on the floor of a venue before soundcheck. America has clean floors. First night in the country and forget american tipping etiquette, oops. America welcomes us and new friends gained make jetlag fade into residual brain fuzz.
-Empire State Building, we got to the top and it was cloudy, we laugh out loud, American Moms shoot us “you’re making it worse for the kids” glances. oops. People-watching in the queue makes up for the wait though with ‘Old Man with Hairy Neck’ winning our affections.
-Union Hall Brooklyn, Skippy the promoter is a stellar gentleman. Unisex bathrooms facilitate pre-show ‘heads up’ though I dont know if we’ll ever be able to pull off one of those prayer-circle type heave-hos. There’s not enough of us, it’d be a triangle. Barman lets me sample a little bit of all the beers on tap, blueberry beer wins the date.
- We shot a video in the NYC sun. Whilst we were playing on a street corner. Nestor is narrowly missed by a chunk of marble falling from a two storey window. Mother and 2yr old child come apologise- he’d been watching us and pushed a book end off the windowcil. Harlem and the video crew treats us very well and we luckily avoid the lightning storms of the last few days.
-A night out on the lower east side proves fruitful as we find a late opening bar with the new Batman Dark Knight pinball machine. We were informed that the “flippers are cherry” and they were. I remember American tipping etiquette.
-Nestor and I both sleep through our alarms and Doug wakes up needing a piss half an hour after we are supposed to be in a taxi to the airport (5am). Check-in partly in PJs, and change in departure lounge. Free G and T on the plane, god bless air france.
That was West and now we’re headed east….
On monday we leave these shores via sunny Hull and will propell ourselves around a large part of Europe, fueled largely by the kindness of everyone that attended the Brudenell Bake Sale. The WI invented DIY dontcha know…
So as the Sky Larkin steamroller advances eastwards we’ll be thinking of you all!
faithfully,
katie x
